I nearly forgot Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 8th.
Which didn’t quite surprise me, as any mother knows, life gets ahead of you and we’re all just trying to catch up.
As I take a moment to think about motherhood and moms, I find that I’ve always wanted to be the kind of mom my kids could trust, one they’d want hang out with, and know that I’d always have their back. I’d also love it if they’d feel slightly embarrassed, yet secretly pleased when I gush and squeal over the wonder of sharing the same air with them.
It isn’t easy, it requires work, and thought, and effort to create a home where these goals can be present, not just in thought, but in deeds. Of course, as mothers we won’t know if any of our efforts work until our children have long flown our nests. All we can do in the meantime is simply love these precious ones as much as we can. As we are merciful and patient with our kids, we can hope that that same mercy and patience will be returned to us, in time.
Our family enjoys moments. We also enjoy experiencing moments together. Travel is one of our family’s favorite hobbies, as is a grand love affair with food. This summer we have the opportunity to visit Paris, France together, for the first time. Admittedly, we made Paris work for our summer because our daughters have been dreaming of Paris for a long time, and we’re grateful we can do that visit together.
So it was a treat to be invited by Mimi’s Cafe to preview their fantastic menu for Mother’s Day. Since it is Mimi’s Cafe, where they love their French roots, they’ll be celebrating mothers by offering those that visit on May 8, 2016, Mother’s Day, a free entrée on a second visit, thru May 29th. In France, May 29th is Fête des Meres (Mother’s Day).
I discovered Mimi’s Cafe with my mother, many years ago. I recall how much we all loved the refillable bread basket. Our favorite bread in that basket? Easy. Carrot Cake.
For any of you that love the Carrot Cake as much as we do, ‘fess up. You snuck some in a napkin, into your purse too, didn’t you? I feel like every photo of Mimi’s Cafe carrot cake on social media should include the hashtag #purseworthy, #napkinnabbed or #mimistogo.
When we visited our local Mimi’s Cafe we were immediately welcomed by Ramon, the general manager. He was manning the door to Mimi’s Cafe and just welcoming all their patrons in for the evening. Our hostess was sweet and accommodating and we settled into our Mimi’s Cafe booth like it was our own little spot.
My daughters and I ordered off the Mother’s Day Menu. Mimi’s Cafe is offering a three-course meal for just $16.99 per person. You’ll have the option to choose soup or salad, a main entree, and a dessert. I know you’re supposed to wait for dessert, but let me just tell you upfront, the Chocolate Chip Croissant Bread Pudding with the all-butter and almond croissants with chocolate chips, salted caramel and whipped cream is… heavenly. It was our favorite dessert. We did try the Strawberry Shortcake Crêpe Cake, and it was quite tasty with the fresh strawberries, and so creative with the crepe texture too. Yum.
I guess I should rewind and start with our first course now. My daughters went for the french onion soup and I dived into the corn chowder. We’ve always enjoyed Mimi’s Cafe soups, just like their comforting, reliable bread baskets. Comfort food just creates good feelings. For our main entrees we love to share, the better to try everything. So my daughters ordered the Slow-Roasted Turkey dinner with all the fixings, and the Chicken Tillamook Cheddar Mac. I ordered the Mushroom Brie Burger with an extra yolky egg on top. I am always thrilled when chefs will throw me an egg over my meal. My daughters were trying to steal all the tasty mushrooms off my burger, and I kept going back into their dish of the creamy Mac. You really can’t go wrong when you use Tillamook cheese. Way to go Mimi’s! I’m also a sucker for Thanksgiving dinner, and my daughters and I agreed, we were ready for the turkey-induced nap. My husband chose the Mimi’s Cafe Surf ‘N Turf. We left having spent some family time together knowing that I’d be able to walk out of Mimi’s Cafe with not a dish to be washed or put away in sight. Perfect. Will you be treating your mom this Mother’s Day? Mimi’s Cafe will also offer moms who visit on May 8th, a free pastry and gifts. Remember to make mom that reservation.
Do you have a favorite Mimi’s Cafe dish? What is your mom’s favorite dish?
Mimi’s Cafe invited my family out for a lovely meal. All opinions, excitement and fun were entirely our own.
